Movie Story
Jack Morgan is a special dog therapist. He used to be famous for being able to understand what his own dog was thinking. But Jack cannot read the minds of other dogs. Even so, he still runs a business where he pretends to read dog minds. He does not tell his customers the truth.
One day, Mr. Mooney and his wife bring their dog to see Jack. Mr. Mooney is not happy because Jack cannot read his dog's mind. Mr. Mooney is a friend of the city mayor. He threatens to have Jack's business shut down.
After the Mooneys leave, a very rich man named Clyde Windsor visits Jack. He brings his dog, Lucky. Jack is shocked because he can actually read Lucky's mind! This worries him, so he ends the session early. Before Mr. Windsor leaves, Jack tells him that three people living with him are bothering Lucky.
Two weeks later, the city closes Jack's business. At the same time, Mr. Windsor's driver, Calvin Bridges, tells Jack that Mr. Windsor has passed away. Mr. Windsor's lawyer, Allison Kent, reads his will to his niece and two nephews. Their names are Margaret, Lyle, and Rueben.
The will says that these three relatives get almost nothing from Mr. Windsor's money. Instead, Lucky the dog inherits all of his money and his big mansion! Jack meets with Allison. She tells him that Mr. Windsor chose Jack to manage Lucky's $64 million trust fund.
Jack agrees to move into the mansion. He also becomes Lucky's new owner, as the trust fund requires. This means Lyle, Margaret, and Rueben have to move out.
Mr. Windsor's relatives meet with Mr. Phister. He is a lawyer who loves money. He will only take their case to court if they give him 30 percent of the trust fund money. Mr. Windsor's relatives are used to living a fancy life. They decide to try and get the mansion back and become the trust fund managers themselves.
One night, Jack starts acting like a dog. This happens after Lucky gets very excited about dog bones he buried in the backyard. Jack joins Lucky in digging for bones. Later, they tear up furniture together. This dog-like behavior scares away the mansion's two maids.
The next morning, Jack explains to Calvin what happened. He says that when Lucky gets too excited, he takes over Jack's body. Jack then "becomes" Lucky. Later that day, Jack and Calvin take Lucky to a shopping mall. They want to help Lucky feel better about his owner's death.
At the mall's pet store, Jack signs more papers for Allison. He also meets her daughter, Nicole. Nicole wants to buy a puppy. But Allison tells her daughter that their apartment is too small for a puppy. In the mall's food court, Lucky smells food and gets excited. Jack's mind changes again, and he acts like Lucky. Jack and Lucky eat leftover food from tables and a trash can.
After many tries, Mr. Windsor's relatives agree to Mr. Phister's expensive offer. They decide to go to court to try and prove Jack is not fit to manage the money. At the courthouse, Jack shows his special connection to Lucky. He gets Lucky excited. Then, Jack shows that when Lucky controls his body, he can identify things he cannot see, but Lucky can.
Through Lucky's thoughts, Jack learns that Lyle might have done something bad to his uncle. Lyle then threatens the courtroom with a gun. This happens after Jack suggests Lyle harmed his uncle. Lucky knocks Lyle over. Lyle is arrested along with Margaret and Rueben.
Back at the mansion, Jack tells Allison and Nicole a big surprise. He bought all the dogs from the mall's pet store! Lucky had asked him to. Among the new dogs living at the mansion is a puppy for Nicole. There is also a female dog who will be a companion for Lucky.
