Early Life and Moving to France
Youssouf Mulumbu was born in Kinshasa, Zaire. His parents were born in Léopoldville, which was then called the Belgian Congo.
In the late 1980s, his family moved to France. He grew up in a town called Épinay-sous-Sénart, which is near Paris. He became a French citizen on April 10, 2001, because his parents became citizens.
Club Football Journey
Starting at Paris Saint-Germain
Mulumbu began playing football at the Paris Saint-Germain Academy when he was 13 years old. He made his first professional debut in France's top league, Ligue 1, on October 22, 2006. He was 19 years old at the time.
In the 2007–08 season, he played for Amiens in Ligue 2 (the second division) on a loan. He scored one goal in 29 games for them.
Time at West Bromwich Albion
In January 2009, Mulumbu went to England to try out for Premier League team West Bromwich Albion. On February 2, 2009, he joined them on a loan deal. This meant he would play for them for a short time, with a chance to join permanently later.
His first time at West Brom was tough because of injuries. He finally played his first Premier League game in April. On July 10, 2009, he officially signed a permanent contract with West Brom for £175,000.
Mulumbu became a very important player for West Brom. At the end of the 2010-11 season, both the club and the fans chose him as their Player of the Year. He signed new contracts, showing how much the club valued him.
On March 15, 2014, Mulumbu scored a very important goal for West Brom. It was the winning goal in a 2–1 game against Swansea City. This win was the first for their new coach, Pepe Mel.
Playing for Norwich City
In June 2015, Mulumbu joined Norwich City for free. Norwich City had just been promoted to the Premier League.
However, soon after joining, Mulumbu broke a bone in his foot during a friendly game. This meant he needed surgery and missed the start of the 2015–16 season. He finally played his first game for Norwich on October 27 in a League Cup match.
He didn't play much in the Premier League that season. Other players were chosen over him in midfield. Norwich City was then moved down to the Championship league at the end of the season.
Mulumbu stayed with Norwich for the 2016–17 season but still didn't get many chances to play. His last game for Norwich was in February 2017. In May, Norwich announced that Mulumbu would leave the club when his contract ended.
Moving to Scottish Clubs
On November 22, 2017, Mulumbu signed with Scottish Premiership club Kilmarnock. He joined his former coach, Steve Clarke, who he had worked with at West Bromwich. He scored his first goal for Kilmarnock in a 1–0 win against Celtic on February 3, 2018.
On August 31, 2018, Mulumbu signed a two-year deal with Celtic. However, he was loaned back to Kilmarnock on January 31, 2019, for the rest of that season. He played 12 games during this second time at Kilmarnock. In June 2019, Mulumbu left Celtic after playing only three games for them.
Return to Kilmarnock
After not playing football for a year, Mulumbu trained with Kilmarnock in August 2020. On August 28, he officially rejoined the club on a six-month contract. He extended his contract until the end of the 2020–21 season. He left Kilmarnock in May 2021 to move to France.
Playing in Congo
On July 31, 2021, Mulumbu signed a one-year contract with Saint-Éloi Lupopo in Congo. This marked his return to playing football in his home country. He left the club in August 2022 after his contract ended. He had played well and helped the team finish third in the national championship.
Latest Club: Orléans
On September 21, 2023, Mulumbu signed a one-year contract with the French club Orléans, which plays in the Championnat National league. He got injured during practice shortly after joining, which delayed his first game for the team.
Playing for His Country
Mulumbu played for France's under-20 and under-21 national teams when he was younger. He played his first game for the DR Congo national team on March 26, 2008, against Algeria.
In 2009, Mulumbu decided to stop playing for his national team for a while. He said there was a "lack of professionalism" in the DR Congo Football Federation. On September 23, 2011, he officially announced he was retiring from international duties. However, in July 2012, he changed his mind and decided to play for DR Congo again. He helped the team finish in third place at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
