Discover the History of Ypsilanti
Ypsilanti has an interesting past, starting with how it got its land and its name.
How Ypsilanti Began
In 1879, the U.S. government gave a large piece of land to the Northern Pacific Railway. This railway company helped build train lines across the country. Part of this land later became Ypsilanti Township and the town of Ypsilanti.
Two men, William Hartley Colby and Lloyd DePuy, planned out the town. William H. Colby came from a city named Ypsilanti, Michigan. He liked the name so much that he decided to name this new North Dakota town after it.
The First Post Office
The first post office in Ypsilanti was not in the town itself. It was set up in Theodore Doughty's home, about half a mile north of Ypsilanti. This home was also a stop for stage coaches, which were like old-time buses pulled by horses.
In 1882, the post office moved into the main part of Ypsilanti. Over the years, it moved a few more times. Finally, in 1967, a special building was built just for the post office.
Building Ypsilanti Park
Ypsilanti Park is a great place for the community. The park's dam was built in 1931 and 1932. This project was part of the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). The W.P.A. was a government program that created jobs during a tough economic time.
After the dam was finished, the park was built next to it. Ed Whitney generously gave the land for the park. Local businesses and groups helped by donating the first playground equipment. James Crouch built the first two fireplaces, perfect for picnics. Stan Nicholls, Bob Kotts, and a man named Glaspell were the main people who organized the park's construction.
Ypsilanti's Climate and Weather
Ypsilanti experiences a type of weather called a humid continental climate. This means the area has big changes in temperature throughout the year.
