Yu-Gi-Oh! is a Japanese anime (cartoon show) that first aired in 1998. It is based on a popular manga (Japanese comic book) series with the same name. The manga was created by Kazuki Takahashi. This 1998 show was the very first anime version of the Yu-Gi-Oh! story.

The series was made by Toei Animation. It was directed by Hiroyuki Kakudō. The story is about a shy boy named Yugi Mutou. He solves an ancient puzzle called the Millennium Puzzle. When he does, a mysterious alter-ego (another personality) wakes up inside him. This alter-ego, known as Yami Yugi, helps Yugi solve problems. He does this by challenging people to different kinds of games. The show loosely follows the first part of the manga. It also adds new stories and characters not seen in the original comic.

The show was broadcast in Japan on TV Asahi. It ran from April 4, 1998, to October 10, 1998. After the series ended, a movie was released on March 6, 1999. The opening song for the show is "A Yell of Thirst" by FIELD OF VIEW. The ending song is "Even if You Break Tomorrow" by WANDS.

About the Story and Characters

The Yu-Gi-Oh! anime focuses on Yugi Mutou. He is a kind but often bullied high school student. His life changes when he completes the Millennium Puzzle. This ancient artifact holds a powerful spirit. This spirit is Yami Yugi, a confident and skilled gamer. Yami Yugi often takes over Yugi's body to challenge bad guys to "Dark Games." These games are high-stakes contests. The losers face a "Penalty Game," which is a special punishment.

Yugi has a group of loyal friends. They include:

  • Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler in later versions): A tough but loyal friend.
