Kazuo Takahashi (高橋 一雅, Takahashi Kazuo, October 4, 1961 – c. July 4, 2022), known professionally as Kazuki Takahashi (高橋 和希, Takahashi Kazuki), was a Japanese manga artist and game creator. He is best known for creating the super popular series Yu-Gi-Oh!

A Creative Career

Takahashi started drawing manga in the early 1980s. He created short stories for different magazines like Weekly Shōnen Sunday and Weekly Shōnen Magazine. His first big work was a one-time story called Tokio no Taka (Fighting Hawk), which came out in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1990. He also published Tennenshoku Danji Buray from 1991 to 1992. However, Takahashi felt that many of his early works weren't very successful.

The Birth of Yu-Gi-Oh!

In 1996, Takahashi launched Yu-Gi-Oh! in Weekly Shōnen Jump. This series was published regularly until 2004. It became a massive hit, selling over 40 million copies! Yu-Gi-Oh! also became a popular anime TV show and a very famous trading card game. Even after the original manga finished, Takahashi continued to oversee the Yu-Gi-Oh! world.

Later Works and Awards

In 2013, Takahashi released a one-shot manga called Drump, which was based on a new game he created. In 2015, he received the Inkpot Award from Comic-Con International. This award celebrates people who have made amazing contributions to comics. Later, in 2018, Takahashi published a short series called The Comiq. He also wrote a two-part manga story called Secret Reverse for a special collaboration between Marvel and Shōnen Jump+. This story came out in September 2019.

About Kazuki Takahashi

Takahashi loved playing games! Some of his favorites included shogi (a Japanese board game), mahjong, different card games, and tabletop role-playing games.

His Favorite Stories

In an interview, Takahashi shared some of his favorite manga by other artists. These included Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure by Hirohiko Araki, and Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama. He also enjoyed reading American comics, and his favorite American comic book character was Hellboy.

Taro the Shiba Inu

Takahashi had a pet dog, a shiba inu named Taro (タロ). This dog even inspired a Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game monster card called Shiba-Warrior Taro (しばせんタロ). Takahashi himself drew the artwork for this card!

Sharing His Thoughts

Sometimes, Takahashi used his art to share his thoughts on important topics. For example, he once posted a drawing on Instagram with Yu-Gi-Oh! characters. Through his art, he encouraged people to "vote for justice" in an election. He later apologized for this post.

His Passing

Kazuki Takahashi passed away on July 4, 2022. On July 6, his body was found off the coast of Nago, Okinawa, by officers from the Japan Coast Guard. He had been wearing snorkeling gear. After an investigation, it was determined that his cause of death was drowning.
