Yu Rong (郁蓉) is a talented Chinese artist who creates amazing pictures for children's books. She is famous for using a special art style called papercutting. Yu Rong has won many awards for her beautiful illustrations.

About Yu Rong

Yu Rong was born in China. Before becoming an artist, she was a teacher for young students. She then went to Nanjing Normal University to study Chinese Painting and Design. Later, she moved to London, UK, to study Communication and Design at the Royal College of Art. Today, she lives near Cambridge in the UK.

Awards and Recognitions

Yu Rong has received many awards for her work in children's books. Here are some of them:

  • 2000 - She won the Sheila Robinson Drawing Prize.
  • 2008 - Her book Tracks of a Panda was named a Notable Children's Book by the American Library Association (ALA).
  • 2013 - She received the Golden Apple Award at the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava (BIB) for her book Free as a Cloud.
  • 2013 - Free as a Cloud also won the Grand Jury Prize and Reader's Choice Prize at the Shanghai International Children's Bookfair Golden Pinwheel Awards.
  • 2015 - Her picture book Smoke won the best picture book award at the Chen Bochui International Children's Literature Award.
  • 2016 - Summer was chosen for The White Ravens selection of International Children's and Youth Literature.
  • 2017 - She won the Purple Island Award at the Nami Island International Picture Book Illustration Concours for Smoke.
  • 2018 - Her book I am Hua Mulan won the Chinese Picture Book Time Award Golden Prize.
  • 2022 - Shu Lin's Grandpa was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal, a major award for children's book illustration.
  • 2023 - The Visible Sounds was shortlisted for the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration.
