The Yucatan bobwhite is also known as the black-throated bobwhite. Its scientific name is Colinus nigrogularis. This bird is a type of bird that belongs to the New World quail family, called Odontophoridae.
You can find the Yucatan bobwhite in several countries. These include Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. It likes to live in warm places. Its natural habitats include dry areas with shrubs, grassy lands that get wet sometimes, and coastal mangrove forests. It can also live in areas where forests used to be but are now changed. For example, it lives in the Petenes mangroves in the Yucatan region.

What the Yucatan Bobwhite Looks Like
Male and female Yucatan bobwhites look different from each other. They are small, round birds that live on the ground. They are about 20 centimetres (8 in) long.
Male Yucatan Bobwhite
The male bird has a black throat. This black throat has a white edge around it. It also has a white forehead and a black stripe near its eye. The top of its head is black. The back of its neck, shoulders, and sides are reddish-brown. These parts have many small white spots. The rest of its upper body is brownish with reddish-brown and grey stripes. Its belly feathers are white with black edges, which makes them look like scales. The lower part of its belly and the feathers under its tail are cinnamon-colored.
Female Yucatan Bobwhite
The female bird looks similar to the male. However, the back of her neck and her shoulders are black with lighter spots. Her throat is a light yellowish-brown color. Her chest and belly are white with reddish-brown and black stripes.
Where the Yucatan Bobwhite Lives
The Yucatan bobwhite lives in Central America. Its home range goes from the Yucatan Peninsula down to Honduras and Nicaragua. It likes to live in open spaces within forests. It also lives in pine savannahs, rough grasslands, and fields with many weeds. You can also find it in farms that grow henequen plants.
Status of the Yucatan Bobwhite
The Yucatan bobwhite lives in a very large area. It is also quite common to see. Experts believe that the number of these birds is staying steady. Because of this, the International Union for Conservation of Nature says that the Yucatan bobwhite is a species of "least concern". This means it is not currently in danger of disappearing.
