Yuen Woo-ping (born August 24, 1945) is a famous Hong Kong martial arts choreographer and film director. He is known for his amazing work in both Hong Kong action cinema and Hollywood films. He even has a star on the Avenue of Stars in Hong Kong! Yuen Woo-ping's father, Yuen Siu-tien, was also a well-known martial arts film actor.

Life and Career

Yuen Woo-ping was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. He started his career in films with the help of Ng See-yuen. In 1978, he directed his first big movies, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master.

These films were huge hits. They helped make Jackie Chan a major movie star. They also started a new trend of adding comedy to martial arts films. This style became very popular for many years.

Yuen Woo-ping directed other successful films starring famous martial arts actors. He worked with Sammo Hung in Magnificent Butcher (1979) and Yuen Biao in Dreadnaught (1981). He also directed Donnie Yen in Iron Monkey (1993) and Jet Li in Tai Chi Master (1993). Later, he directed Michelle Yeoh in Wing Chun (1994).

Working in Hollywood

Yuen Woo-ping's incredible action choreography, especially in Fist of Legend (1994), caught the eye of the Wachowskis. They hired him to be the martial arts choreographer for their movie The Matrix (1999). This movie was a massive success.

The next year, he also choreographed the action for the hit film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Because of these two big successes, Hollywood wanted him for many more projects. He worked on the next two Matrix movies. He also choreographed the action for Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004).

Recent Projects

Yuen Woo-ping continued to work on major films in Hong Kong. He choreographed Kung Fu Hustle (2004), starring Stephen Chow. He also worked on Fearless (2006), which starred Jet Li.

In 2008, he choreographed the action for The Forbidden Kingdom. This Hollywood martial arts film was special because it was the first time Jackie Chan and Jet Li starred together. He also helped with the fight scenes in Ninja Assassin (2009).

In 2010, Yuen Woo-ping directed True Legend, his first film as a director since 1996. He also worked as a stunt coordinator for two South Indian films, Enthiran (2010) and I (2014).

In 2015, he directed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. This movie brought back many of his famous action styles.
