The Yunganastes bisignatus is a special type of frog. It belongs to a family of frogs called Strabomantidae. This frog is only found in one place in the world. It lives in the La Paz Department in Bolivia.

Scientists once thought this frog was the same as another frog, Pristimantis fenestratus. But now they know it is its own unique species.

What Does This Frog Look Like?

These frogs are not very big. Adult male frogs are about 2.8 to 3.5 centimeters long. That's about the size of a large paperclip! Female frogs are a bit bigger. One female frog found was about 4.7 centimeters long.

Colors and Markings

The Yunganastes bisignatus has a dark reddish-brown back. Its sides are lighter, with a creamy color. You might see dark brown patterns on its body. There is often a thin dark brown line. This line goes from the tip of its nose to its eye.

The frog's belly is cream-colored. It has fine, dense grey spots on its throat.

Head and Feet Features

This frog's head is wider than it is long. It has a short snout, which is like its nose area. You can see its eardrum, called a tympanum. But a fold of skin partly covers it.

Its fingers and toes have slightly wider tips. These tips help the frog grip surfaces. However, it does not have extra skin flaps or webbing between its toes.

Where Does This Frog Live?

The Yunganastes bisignatus lives in warm, wet montane forests. These are forests found in mountains. They live at high places, from about 1,850 to 2,700 meters above sea level. That's like living on top of a very tall mountain!

Daily Life and Sounds

This frog is active during the day. This means it is diurnal. Male frogs like to call out to attract females. They usually call from low spots, like on tree trunks or bushes. They call about 0.3 to 0.6 meters off the ground.

They call at night, but also during the day. They especially call when the weather is foggy and rainy.

Protecting the Yunganastes bisignatus

There are many Yunganastes bisignatus frogs in the area where they were first discovered. However, they only live in a small area. Their home is getting smaller because of habitat loss. This means their forest homes are being destroyed.

Luckily, some of these frogs live in a safe place. They are found in the Cotapata National Park and Integrated Management Natural Area. This park helps protect their natural home.
