Yury Rafaelovich Dokhoian (Russian: Юрий Рафаэлович Дохоян) was a talented Russian chess player. He was born on October 26, 1964, and passed away on July 1, 2021. Yury Dokhoian held the title of Grandmaster, which is the highest honor a chess player can achieve.
He was also a very respected coach for many top chess players. Dokhoian was of Armenian background.
Becoming a Chess Grandmaster
Yury Dokhoian played many times in the top chess championship of the Soviet Union. In 1986, he came in second place in a big tournament for young chess masters.
He won several international chess tournaments. Some of his first-place wins include events in Bucharest (1986), Plovdiv (1988), Berlin (1992), Bad Godesberg (1993), Lublin (1993), and Bonn (1993). He also tied for first place in Wijk aan Zee (1989) and Copenhagen (1991).
Coaching Top Players
For many years, Yury Dokhoian worked as a "second" for Garry Kasparov. In chess, a "second" is a coach who helps a player prepare for games. They analyze opponents and suggest strategies.
In 2009, Dokhoian started working with another famous player, Sergey Karjakin. At the same time, he became the coach for the Russian women's national chess team. He also coached two world-class female players, the sisters Tatiana and Nadezhda Kosintseva.
Because of his great coaching skills, he received the title of FIDE Senior Trainer in 2007.
His Passing
Yury Dokhoian died in Moscow on July 1, 2021. He passed away due to COVID-19.
