Yvonne Boag (born 13 August 1954) is an Australian artist. She is known for her paintings and printmaking. Her art often shows the many different places she has lived and worked.

Early Life and Art School

Yvonne Boag was born in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1964, when she was 10 years old, her family moved to Australia. They settled in Port Pirie, a city known for its industry. Yvonne went to Port Pirie High School.

Her art teacher, Petrus Spronk, saw her talent. He encouraged her to apply to the South Australian School of Art in Adelaide. Yvonne studied there and chose to focus on printmaking. She learned from a teacher named Franz Kempf. She finished her studies in 1976.

In 1977, Yvonne moved to Melbourne. She worked at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. There, she met and worked with many other talented printmakers. These included artists like George Baldessin and Tate Adams.

Travels and Teaching

In 1985, Yvonne Boag moved to Sydney. She showed her art at Australian Galleries. She also taught art at several schools. These included the National Art School and Sydney College of the Arts.

During the 1990s, Yvonne held art workshops every year. These workshops took place in a remote Aboriginal community called Lockhart River in northern Queensland.

Yvonne also traveled and worked a lot overseas. She was an artist-in-residence at the Aberdeen Art Gallery in Scotland. She lived in Paris for five years. During this time, she had a residency at the Moya Dyring Studio. She also worked in Venice, Italy, at the Scuola Internazionale di Graphica.

In 1995, she was the first artist-in-residence for Asialink in Seoul, South Korea. In 1998, she received an award from the Australia Council for the Arts for a residency in Japan. Since then, she has spent many months in South Korea. She teaches, shows her art, and works as a consultant there. Today, she divides her time between Seoul and Sydney.

About Her Art

Yvonne Boag has lived in many different countries and cultures. This experience has made her think a lot about feeling "displaced." This means feeling like you are in a new or unfamiliar place. Her art is her way of reacting to these new surroundings.

She often simplifies images into semi-abstract shapes. These shapes combine areas of color with lines. Her artworks have strong, clear forms that look like signs. Her pictures can seem simple, but they also have deeper meanings. They show how the artist feels and thinks about being in a foreign place.
