José Alves dos Santos, known by his nickname Zague, was a talented Brazilian football player. He was born on August 10, 1934, and passed away on January 19, 2021. Zague played as a forward, which means his main job was to score goals for his team.
He played for several important clubs during his career. These included Corinthians in his home country of Brazil. He also became a legend playing for Club América in Mexico.
Zague's Football Journey
Zague joined Club América, a very popular football team in Mexico, in 1961. He was one of the big new players brought in by the team's owner, Emilio Azcárraga Milmo. Azcárraga also owned a large television network called Televisa.
Zague was known for his special way of playing. As a forward, he mostly stayed near the opposing team's goal. He waited for his teammates to pass the ball to him. Then, he would take a powerful shot to score. Because of this unique style, fans and sports reporters called him "The Lone Wolf."
Zague scored many goals for Club América. He scored 102 goals in total for the club. Out of these, 86 goals were scored during league games. He was so good at scoring that he won the Golden Boot award in the 1965-1966 season. This award is given to the player who scores the most goals in the league. Zague scored 20 goals that season.
Family Life
Zague was born in Bahia, a state in Brazil. His family was very important to him.
His son, Luís Roberto Alves, also became a famous football player. Luís Roberto was born in Mexico while Zague was playing there. He was also nicknamed Zaguinho or Zague, just like his father. Luís Roberto followed in his father's footsteps. He also played for Club América and even for the Mexico national team.
