Zahar Oleksandrovych Efimenko, born on July 3, 1985, is a talented chess player from Ukraine. He holds the highest title in chess, called a Grandmaster. Zahar was part of the Ukrainian team that won a gold medal at the Chess Olympiad in 2010. He also played in the FIDE World Cup tournaments in 2005, 2009, and 2011.

Early Success in Youth Chess

In 1999, Zahar Efimenko showed his amazing chess skills. He won the Under-14 division at the World Youth Chess Championships. This big event took place in Oropesa del Mar, Spain. In the same year, he was also a key player for the Ukrainian national youth team. This team won the Under-16 Chess Olympiad, which was held in Artek, Ukraine.

Becoming a Chess Champion

Since his early wins, Efimenko has won many chess tournaments. In 2001, he won the Stork Young Masters tournament in Hengelo, Netherlands. A few years later, in 2005, he tied for first place with several other strong players. This happened at the Gibraltar Chess Festival. He shared the top spot with famous Grandmasters like Levon Aronian and Alexei Shirov.

In 2006, Zahar Efimenko became the champion of Ukraine. This was a major achievement in his home country. The next year, in 2007, he tied for first place again. This time it was at the 16th Monarch Assurance Isle of Man International tournament. He shared the win with five other Grandmasters.

Team Gold and Individual Medals

In May 2010, Efimenko tied for first place at the 40th Bosna International Tournament in Sarajevo. He shared the win with Victor Bologan. Later that same year, he played in the 39th Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk. Here, he helped his Ukrainian team win the gold medal. He also won an individual silver medal for his great performance on board 4.

In July 2013, he tied for first place at the Masters tournament of the Abu Dhabi Chess Festival. He shared this victory with Igor Kurnosov, Mikhailo Oleksienko, and Avetik Grigoryan. In 2015, Efimenko tied for first place once more. This was at the Ukrainian championship in Lviv, where he shared the win with Andrei Volokitin and Martyn Kravtsiv.

Zahar Efimenko's Personal Life

Zahar Efimenko married another chess player from Ukraine. Her name is Maria Tantsiura, and she is a Woman International Master (WIM). They got married on April 25, 2015.
