About Zaho's Early Life
Zahera Darabid was born in Bab Ezzouar, a town near Algiers, the capital city of Algeria. When she was 18, her family moved to Montréal, Canada. Her father worked as an executive, and her mother was a mathematics professor. Zaho also has a brother and a sister.
During her childhood in Algeria, there was a difficult period of civil war. This made life very challenging for many people. Zaho's family decided to move to Canada in December 1998. They were part of a special program that helped skilled people, like her computer scientist parents, move to the country.
Zaho continued her studies in Canada. She had already finished high school in Algeria at age 16. She went to the Université de Montréal to study computer engineering. Even though she was a top student, she really wanted to make music. Her parents found it a bit hard to understand her strong passion for music at first.
Zaho's Music Career
Zaho started learning to play the guitar when she was just seven years old. She quickly learned many songs by the famous singer Francis Cabrel. When she moved to Montreal in 1999, she discovered the professional music world. She met producers and worked in studios.
She has worked with well-known French artists like Idir, Tunisiano, and Soprano.
First Album and Success
In 2008, Zaho released her first album, called Dima. This word means Always in Arabic.
Zaho is also a great songwriter. She wrote a song called "Tout ce temps" for Idir. When Idir heard it, he liked it so much that he asked her to sing it with him.
In 2008, Zaho represented France at the MTV EMA's (MTV Europe Music Awards). She won the award for Best European Artist. She is very popular in France and French-speaking Canada, as well as in other places around the world.
