History of Zelaya
Zelaya was started in 1829. This was during the time Juan Manuel de Rosas was in charge. Back then, Zelaya was a rural area. It had people living on different farmhouses called estancias.
The Miracle of Our Lady of Lujan
A long time ago, in 1630, something amazing happened near the Luján River. This was at a farmhouse owned by Rosendo. An image of the Virgin Mary arrived at the port of Buenos Aires. It was supposed to go to another town, Sumampa. But when it reached Don Rosendo's farmhouse in Zelaya, the oxen pulling the cart would not move.
The oxen only started moving when the boxes with the image were taken off the cart. People believed this was a miracle. So, the Virgin Mary's image stayed there. It was honored in a small chapel for 40 years.
Later, a woman named Ana de Matos bought the image. She took it to Luján, where it is still today. In Zelaya, a small chapel now stands where the old farmhouse was. It has a copy of the image to remember the miracle.
Zelaya's Railway Station
The railway line to Zelaya opened on April 30, 1892. This was the first train station in the Pilar area. The line was later extended to Capilla del Señor. On July 5, 1894, the railway reached San Antonio de Areco.
The Zelaya station was very busy. When the Ferrocarril General Bartolomé Mitre railway was run by Argentines, many trains passed through. More than 80 trains carried goods and people. They went to places like Santa Fe and Cordoba.
Trains went daily to many towns. These included Retiro, Victoria, and Capilla del Señor. In 1995, the company running the trains closed the Zelaya station. It became just a train stop.
