History of Zempoala
Ancient Times: Toltecs and Chichimecs
Zempoala was a very important place long ago, even before the Spanish arrived. Two main groups of people lived there: the Toltecs and the Chichimecs. The Chichimecs came to Zempoala around the year 1120. They were led by a ruler named King Xolotl.
By 1167, Zempoala had become the main city of its region. King Xolotl's son, Nopaltzin, ruled it. Later, in 1430, the area became part of the powerful Texcoco kingdom.
Spanish Arrival and Important Buildings
In 1540, people from Spain arrived in Zempoala. Juan Pérez de Gama was the first Spanish encomendero (a person in charge of the land and its people) in Zempoala.
A very special building project happened between 1553 and 1570. This was the Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque. An aqueduct is like a bridge that carries water. This one was built to bring water from Zempoala to another town called Otumba. In 2015, this amazing aqueduct was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is a very important place that should be protected for everyone to see.
Zempoala Becomes a "Magic Town"
On December 1, 2020, the city of Zempoala received a special title. It was named a Pueblo Mágico, which means "Magic Town." This title is given to towns in Mexico that have special natural beauty, rich history, or unique traditions.
