History of Zevia
How Zevia Started
Zevia began in 2007. It was created to offer a different kind of soft drink for people who wanted to avoid added sugars and artificial sweeteners. The company was founded in Seattle, Washington by Derek Newman, Jessica Newman, and Ian Eisenberg.
Growing Bigger and Better
By the end of 2008, Zevia was already making a big splash! It was the fastest-growing natural product in the United States based on sales. The company earned $925,000 that year, and you could find Zevia products in 850 stores. By 2010, Zevia's sales in the same stores had grown by an amazing 300% compared to 2009.
Paddy Spence bought Zevia in 2010. He became the company's main leader, serving as both the CEO and chairman.
Reaching More People
In July 2012, Zevia put up billboards to support New York City's plan to limit the size of sugary sodas. Paddy Spence even appeared on TV to talk about healthier soda choices.
By May 2012, Zevia was the top-selling soda at Whole Foods stores. By July 2013, it was the 17th best-selling zero-calorie or low-calorie soda in regular grocery stores. This was a big deal because Zevia was the only independent brand in the top 20! By the end of 2013, Zevia's total sales were over $60 million, making it the 14th best-selling diet soda.
By 2014, Zevia products were available in more than 16,000 stores across the United States. These included popular stores like Whole Foods, Target, Kroger, Safeway, and Sprouts.
Changes to Sweeteners
In late 2013, Zevia changed how they sweetened their drinks. They started using a mix of stevia extract, monk fruit extract, and erythritol. They called this new blend "SweetSmart." Then, in September 2016, the company announced another change: all their products would now be sweetened only with stevia.
Sports and New Drinks
In 2014, Zevia teamed up with Major League Baseball. They became the official soda of the Oakland Athletics baseball team. You could buy Zevia soda in bottles at all the food stands at the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum.
Starting in 2016, Zevia began to offer more than just soft drinks. In June 2016, they launched new lines of Sparkling Water and energy drinks. In October 2016, Zevia also introduced its Mixers line.
In 2018, the company launched the Zevia Organic Tea line, which came in various tea flavors. In December 2019, Zevia launched its "Kidz" line. These drinks come in smaller cans and feature classic Disney characters, making them fun for younger kids.
As of 2025, Zevia sells its products in the United States and Canada. The company is also looking to expand into other parts of the world, like Western Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Zevia sells directly to customers through its website and Amazon.com. You can also find their products in over 22,000 retail stores. Zevia says it was the top-selling fizzy soft drink brand on Amazon in 2020.
In June 2021, the company officially applied to sell its shares to the public on the NYSE.
