Zhang Xinshi (Chinese: 张新时) was a very important Chinese scientist. He was born on June 30, 1934, and passed away on September 24, 2020. He was a plant ecologist, which means he studied how plants live and interact with their environment.
Zhang Xinshi started a new way of studying plants in China. He used numbers and data to understand plant life better. This was called quantitative vegetation ecology. He also helped start "international information ecology." He even created China's very first lab for studying plants this way. He was also a member of an important political group in China for many years.

Life Story of Zhang Xinshi
Zhang Xinshi was born in a city called Kaifeng, in the Henan province of China. His family originally came from Gaotang County in Shandong. His father, Zhang Jingyu, was involved in politics and the military.
Education and Early Career
After finishing his studies at Beijing Forestry University in 1955, Zhang Xinshi began working at Xinjiang Agricultural University. Later, in 1979, he went to the United States to study more. He earned his advanced degree from Cornell University, a famous school.
Returning to China
In 1986, Zhang Xinshi came back to China. He joined the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This is a big research center for plants. In 1990, he became the director, or head, of this institute. He led the institute until 1998. Zhang Xinshi passed away in Seattle, United States, after an illness.
Family Life
Zhang Xinshi was married to Ci Longjun. She was also an expert, but her work focused on stopping deserts from growing. They had three children together.
Awards and Recognitions
Zhang Xinshi received several important awards for his scientific work. These awards show how much his research helped China and the world.

- 1991: Became a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). This is a very high honor for scientists in China.
