Zheng Churan (Chinese: 鄭楚然; pinyin: Zhèng Chǔrán) is a brave Chinese women's rights activist and feminist. A feminist is someone who believes in equal rights and opportunities for girls and boys, women and men. In March 2015, she and four other activists were held by authorities just before they planned events for International Women's Day. These five women are often called the Feminist Five. In November 2016, Zheng Churan was recognized by the BBC as one of their 100 Women 2016, which highlights inspiring women from around the world.
Standing Up for Women's Rights
After being held for 37 days, all five women were finally set free. They had been speaking out for women's rights.
BBC News has shared how Zheng Churan helped organize events and supported women's rights. She also worked hard to get women the right to take special time off when they have their period, known as menstrual leave.
In December 2016, Zheng wrote an open letter to Donald Trump, who was about to become president of the United States. She asked him to be careful about how he spoke about women.
Zheng Churan and another activist named Xiao Meili run an online shop together. It's called Dúpǐn Shāngdiàn (独品商店) on Taobao, a popular online shopping site. They sell items with original designs that share messages about feminism and equality.
In 2018, Zheng Churan was involved in a legal case against Kù Wán Shíyànshì (酷玩实验室), which is a Chinese online media group. She continues to be a strong voice and writer about feminist and human rights issues.
Supporting Workers' Rights
On March 20, 2019, Zheng Churan's husband, Wei Zhili, was taken away by the police. Wei Zhili is a journalist and also works to help workers. He was accused of "disturbing public order" because he helped Chinese workers. These workers had gotten a serious lung disease called pneumoconiosis from unsafe working conditions. Wei Zhili helped them try to get help and money from the government. For several days after he was taken, Zheng and Wei's parents did not know where he was.
After her husband was held, Zheng Churan started an online campaign to bring attention to his situation. She plans to run 10,000 kilometers (about 6,200 miles) and share updates on her progress every day on Twitter. This helps people around the world learn about her husband's case.
