About Zhiibaahaasing First Nation
The Zhiibaahaasing First Nation is made up of Odawa and Ojibwe people. These are two different groups of Indigenous peoples. They live in the Manitoulin District in Ontario.
Where is Zhiibaahaasing Located?
The First Nation has two separate areas of land.
- One area is on Manitoulin Island. It is officially called Zhiibaahaasing 19A. In 2016, 55 people lived there.
- The second area is on Cockburn Island. It is called Zhiibaahaasing 19. No one lives there permanently. Even though no one lives there, the land is still set aside for the Zhiibaahaasing First Nation.
Together, these two land areas cover about 958.3 hectares (about 2,368 acres). The Zhiibaahaasing 19A area alone is about 608.70 hectares (about 1,504 acres).
Looking After the Environment: The Tire Story
For a while, there was a big pile of over one million tires in the Zhiibaahaasing First Nation area. A company planned to recycle these tires. However, their equipment broke down, so the tires just kept piling up.
Many people living nearby were worried. They were concerned about what would happen if the tires caught fire. A tire fire could cause a lot of smoke and harm the environment. In September 2006, the Canadian government agreed to help. They provided money to remove the tires. This helped to make the area safer and cleaner.
