Zwartbles sheep facts for kids
Zwartbles sheep are a large type of domestic sheep. This special breed first came from Holland in the northern part of the Netherlands. Long ago, people used them for their milk and for their meat, which is called lamb and mutton. They often lived in the same fields as dairy cattle, which are cows raised for milk.
These sheep were brought to Great Britain in the late 1900s. They are not super common, but you can find them mostly in the north of England. Zwartbles sheep are known for their unique look: they have reddish-brown wool, black legs with four white "socks," a white tip on their tail, and a black face with a white stripe down the middle. They do not have horns. Baby Zwartbles, called lambs, look similar but have very black wool. These sheep are usually calm and friendly, but they can be a bit tricky to care for.

What Makes Zwartbles Sheep Special?
Zwartbles sheep are mostly raised for their meat, not their wool. Their wool is very dark, which makes it hard to dye different colors. The meat from Zwartbles sheep is known for being lean, meaning it doesn't have much fat, and it has a slightly sweet taste.
How Big Are Zwartbles Sheep?
Zwartbles are quite large sheep. Female Zwartbles, called ewes, usually weigh about 85 kg (187 lb). Male Zwartbles, called rams, are even bigger, weighing around 100 kg (220 lb).
Reproduction and Lambs
Because they are so large, Zwartbles ewes often have many babies at once, sometimes three or even four lambs! While this means more lambs, having so many babies can sometimes make it difficult for the mother when she is giving birth.
History and Popularity
Zwartbles sheep have become less common in their home country of Holland. There are so few left there that they are considered a rare breed by a special trust that protects rare animals.
The first Zwartbles sheep arrived in the United Kingdom in the early 1990s. A group called the Zwartbles Sheep Association was started in 1995 to help farmers and owners of these sheep.
Zwartbles Today
Today, Zwartbles sheep are mainly used for breeding new lambs and for their meat and wool. Since they originally come from the cold, wet, and windy weather of the Netherlands, they can stay healthy in many different places and at various heights in Great Britain.
Some Zwartbles sheep are even shown at agricultural shows. Here, they are judged on how good they look. For these shows, their wool is often trimmed to remove the brown tips. This makes their tight, black fleece stand out as their main color.
