Ángeles Gulín (born February 14, 1939 – died October 10, 2002) was a famous Spanish opera singer. She was a soprano, which means she sang with a very high voice. She was especially known for her amazing performances in early operas by Verdi.
Life and Career
Ángeles Gulín was born in Ribadavia, Spain. When she was eight years old, her family moved to Montevideo, Uruguay. There, she learned to sing from her father, who was a local music director. He even organized concerts in parks!
In 1963, Ángeles made her first appearance in an opera in Montevideo. She stepped in at the last minute to play the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute. After this, she went back to Europe. She sang mostly in Spain and Italy. Some of her early roles included Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Gilda in Rigoletto, and Violetta in La traviata.
In 1968, she won the Busseto Verdian Voices Competition. This competition helped her to take on more challenging and dramatic roles. She became a specialist in early operas by the famous composer Verdi.
Gulín's voice was very powerful and rich, but she could also sing with great skill and quickness. Sadly, her career ended early in 1987 because of serious health problems. She passed away in Madrid.
Ángeles Gulín was married to a baritone (a male opera singer with a middle-range voice) named Antonio Blancas. In 1980, they both performed in a new opera called El poeta. The famous singer Plácido Domingo also starred in this opera. Their daughter, Ángeles Blancas Gulín, also became a soprano.
Many people rediscovered her amazing talent through recordings of her live performances.
