Oscar Eduardo Valdés Dancuart, born on April 3, 1949, is a Peruvian businessman and politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Peru from December 2011 to July 2012. Before that, he was the Minister of the Interior.

Early Life and Military Career
Oscar Valdés was born in Lima, the capital city of Peru. He attended the Chorrillos Military School from 1968 to 1972. After graduating, he joined the Peruvian Army as a second lieutenant in the artillery.
Military Training
From 1987 to 1988, Valdés studied at the United States Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth. This college helps military officers learn important leadership and planning skills.
Instructor Role
During the 1980s, Valdés worked as an instructor at the Chorrillos Military School. One of his students there was Ollanta Humala, who later became the President of Peru.
Leaving the Army
Valdés left the army in January 1991 as a lieutenant colonel. After leaving the military, he started working in the private sector. He managed several businesses in the Tacna Region of Peru.
Political Career
Oscar Valdés became involved in Peruvian politics. He was appointed Minister of the Interior by President Ollanta Humala on July 28, 2011. The Minister of the Interior is in charge of public safety and order.
Becoming Prime Minister
Less than five months later, the Prime Minister at the time, Salomón Lerner Ghitis, resigned. On December 11, 2011, Oscar Valdés was chosen to be the new Prime Minister of Peru. The Prime Minister is the head of the government.
Challenges and Dismissal
During his time as Prime Minister, Valdés faced challenges, especially related to a mining project called Conga. There were protests against this project. Valdés took a firm approach to these protests. This led to some criticism. Former President Alejandro Toledo expressed concerns about the government's approach. Due to the ongoing issues and criticism, Oscar Valdés was dismissed from his role as Prime Minister on July 23, 2012.
