Överkalix (which is pronounced like "OH-ver-kah-liks") is a small town in northern Sweden. It's the main place in the Överkalix Municipality, located in Norrbotten County. In 2010, about 975 people lived there. It's known for its unique climate and a special study about how family health can be passed down through generations.

Understanding the Climate in Överkalix
Överkalix has a subarctic climate. This means it has big differences between its seasons. Summers are short and warm, while winters are long and very cold.
Why Överkalix Summers are Warm
Even though Överkalix is far north, close to the Arctic Circle, its summers can be quite warm. This is because of its location inland and the long hours of daylight. In July, the sun stays up for a very long time, which helps to warm things up. This makes July days warmer than in some cities much further south, like Manchester or Dublin.
Winter Weather in Överkalix
Temperatures drop quickly when the daylight hours get shorter. However, winters in Överkalix are not as harsh as in some other places at the same northern latitude. This is partly because of milder air coming from the North Atlantic Ocean. The climate here is also quite dry for Scandinavia, with about 450 millimeters (17.7 inches) of rain or snow each year.

The Överkalix Study: How Our Past Affects Our Future Health
The Överkalix study was a special research project. It looked at how things like food and the environment can affect health. This study focused on how these effects might even pass down to future generations.
What the Study Looked At
Researchers used old records from Överkalix, a small, isolated town. They looked at information like how good the harvests were and how much food cost. This helped them understand the food supply in the past.
Who Was Included in the Study
The study included 303 people born in 1890, 1905, or 1920. They also looked at 1,818 of their children and grandchildren. By studying these families, researchers could see how health might be linked across generations. They wanted to understand if the food available in the past affected the health of people born later.
Buildings and Structures in Överkalix
Överkalix is home to a very tall structure. It has a 330-meter (about 1,083 feet) tall guyed mast. This mast is used for broadcasting FM radio and TV signals.
