Early Life
Željko Šturanović was born in Nikšić, a city in what was then the People's Republic of Montenegro. At that time, Montenegro was part of a larger country called Yugoslavia.
Becoming Prime Minister
Before becoming Prime Minister, Šturanović worked as the Minister of Justice. This was in the government led by the previous Prime Minister, Milo Đukanović.
In October 2006, Prime Minister Đukanović announced he would not seek the position again. The leaders of his political party then chose Šturanović as their candidate for the next Prime Minister. Even the political groups that usually disagreed with the ruling party welcomed this choice.
On November 10, 2006, the Montenegrin parliament voted to approve Šturanović and his new government. His government had 14 members, including two deputy prime ministers. The parliament approved them with 42 votes in favor and 28 against. Šturanović officially became Prime Minister on the same day.
Time as Prime Minister and Resignation
As Prime Minister, Željko Šturanović signed an important agreement called the Stabilization and Association Agreement. He signed this on behalf of the Montenegrin government on March 15, 2007. This agreement helps countries get closer to joining the European Union.
Sadly, Šturanović was diagnosed with a serious illness during his time as Prime Minister. Even though he was ill, he continued to work for a while. However, on January 31, 2008, he announced his resignation. He explained that his medical treatment required him to work much less than a Prime Minister's job demands.
He stayed in office until the parliament approved and swore in Milo Đukanović as the new Prime Minister at the end of February. Željko Šturanović passed away in Paris, France, on June 30, 2014, at the age of 54.
