Žilavka is a special kind of grape variety used to make white wine. It grows mostly in a sunny area called Herzegovina, which is in the southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This region is near the city of Mostar.
When Žilavka is made into a wine by itself (called a varietal wine), it's known for being very fresh and a bit tangy. It's a great wine to have with meals. Sometimes, it's aged in wooden barrels called "oak barrels." This makes the wine taste richer and more earthy, sometimes even a little nutty.
The Story of Žilavka Grapes
For a long time, Žilavka grapes were grown all over a country that used to be called Yugoslavia. Back then, it was mostly used in small amounts, mixed with other grapes to make different wines.
But now, Žilavka has become much more important! Winemakers bottle it on its own, making it a star wine. It's often seen alongside another main grape from Herzegovina called Blatina.
Where Žilavka Grows Best
Most Žilavka grapes are grown south of the city of Mostar. You can find many vineyards in villages like Čitluk, Međugorje, Ljubuški, and Čapljina.
Some well-known winemakers who grow Žilavka include Nuić, Škegro, Brkić, Vinarija Čitluk, Zadro, and Vitai/Gangaš. They work hard to make delicious wines from these unique grapes.
