History of the Civic Star Award
The Étoile Civique was first created in 1930. Back then, it was called the Mérite Civique (Civic Merit). Its name changed to Étoile Civique in 1968. This change was officially announced in a French government publication.
This award recognizes brave actions and a strong commitment to helping people. It honors those who work hard and give their time without expecting anything in return. It especially looks for people whose good deeds might otherwise go unnoticed.
What the Étoile Civique Aims to Do
The Étoile Civique has three main goals:
- To make life better for everyone, no matter their age, background, or nationality. It focuses on their well-being and interests.
- To protect human rights and encourage people to be good citizens. This is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
- To highlight the good reputation and achievements of France around the world.
Levels and the Medal
This special award comes in four different levels. These levels are bronze, silver, gold, and silver-gilt. Each level shows a different degree of recognition.
The medal itself has a special message on it. On one side, it says: « Honorer les vertus civiques – Servir le prestige national ». This means To honor civic virtues – Serving national prestige. On the other side, it says: « l'Étoile Civique en reconnaissance à ... Promotion ... ». This means The Civic Star in recognition of ... Promotion .... A special certificate is also given with the same message.
