Íñigo Melchor Fernández de Velasco (born April 16, 1629 – died September 27, 1696) was an important Spanish nobleman. He was known as the 7th Duke of Frías. He also held the title of Grandee of Spain and was a Knight of the Order of Santiago.

He served as the Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands from 1668 to 1670. This was a very important leadership role in a part of Europe that is now Belgium and the Netherlands.

Early Life and Family

Íñigo Melchor Fernández de Velasco was born in 1629. His father was Bernardino Fernández de Velasco, 6th Duke of Frías. His mother was Isabel Maria de Guzmán.

He had a famous cousin, King John IV of Portugal. Íñigo Melchor married Maria Teresa de Benavídes Dávila y Corella. They had one daughter named María Remigia. She later became the 7th Marquesa de Berlanga.

Important Political Roles

Íñigo Melchor was a very powerful person in politics. He served during the time of King Charles II of Spain. He inherited the title of Constable of Castile from his father. This was a high military and administrative position.

He was also a member of two important groups: the State Council and the War Council. These councils helped the king make big decisions for the country.

Governor of Galicia

Before becoming Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands, Íñigo Melchor was the Governor of Galicia. Galicia is a region in northwestern Spain. This role gave him experience in leading a large area.

From 1668 to 1670, he served as the Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands. This was a very important job. It meant he was in charge of governing these territories for Spain.

Chief of the King's Household

In 1676, Íñigo Melchor was given another high position. He became the Mayordomo mayor to the King. This meant he was the chief of the King's own household. He managed many important daily affairs for the King.

Legacy and Painting

A famous painting of Íñigo Melchor was made by the artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo in 1659. You can see this painting today in the Louvre museum in Paris, France.

Íñigo Melchor Fernández de Velasco passed away in 1696. After his death, his nephew, José Fernández de Velasco, became the 8th Duke of Frías.
