Bernardino Fernández de Velasco, 6th Duke of Frías, was a powerful Spanish nobleman and diplomat. He was also a Grandee of Spain, which meant he held a very high rank in the Spanish nobility. Bernardino lived from 1609 to 1652.
Biography
Bernardino Fernández de Velasco was the oldest son of Juan Fernández de Velasco and María Angela de Aragón y Guzmán. He took over his father's important title, Constable of Castile. This was a high military and political position.
Like his father, Bernardino served as the Governor of the Duchy of Milan. He held this role between 1647 and 1648. Before that, he was the Viceroy of Aragon from 1645 to 1647. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a country or province as the king's representative. Interestingly, King John IV of Portugal was his nephew.
Family and Children
In 1629, Bernardino married Isabel María de Guzmán. They had four children together. Later, he married María Enríquez Sarmiento de Mendoza, but they did not have any children.

Bernardino also had at least one son outside of his marriages:
- Francisco Fernández de Velasco y Tovar, marquis of Carvajal (1646–1716). He became a military governor in places like Ceuta and Cádiz. He also fought in wars in Portugal, Flanders, and Catalunya against French troops. Later, he was involved in events in Barcelona during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714).
