Ülker is a big food and drink company from Istanbul, Turkey. It sells its products all over the world, to 110 different countries! Ülker is best known for its yummy biscuits, cookies, crackers, and chocolates. But they also make many other kinds of food.
In 2004, Ülker won a special award called "Candy Company of the Year in Europe." Later, in 2007, the company bought a famous chocolate brand called Godiva Chocolatier. This helped Ülker grow even bigger. In 2016, a company called Yıldız Holding moved a large part of Ülker's shares to a new global business called Pladis.
How Ülker Started and Grew
Ülker was started in 1944 by two brothers, Sabri and Asim Ülker. Their parents had moved to Turkey from Crimea. They began with a small bakery in Istanbul. Just a few years later, in 1948, they opened their first factory.
In the 1970s, Ülker started selling its products to countries in the Middle East. They also began making chocolates and improving how they packaged their food. By the end of the 1900s, Ülker was making many new things, like margarine, cooking oil, and dairy products (like milk and cheese).
New Products and Big Changes
Ülker kept adding more products. In 2002, they started making fizzy drinks. In 2003, they added Turkish coffee, ice cream, and even baby food to their list. One of their famous drinks was Cola Turka, which was made to compete with Coca-Cola. A famous actor named Chevy Chase even appeared in a commercial for Cola Turka! This drink was so popular that Coca-Cola lowered its prices. However, in 2015, Ülker decided to stop making drinks.
Ülker's parent company, Yıldız Holding, was very successful. In 2001, it was one of the top five manufacturers in Turkey, with over 41,000 employees. Ülker's sales around the world reached $1.5 billion.
