Kickboxing Achievements

İrem Yaman also competed in kickboxing. In 2012, she won a bronze medal at the WAKO World Kickboxing Championships. This event was for younger athletes and took place in Bratislava, Slovakia. The next year, she earned a silver medal at the W.A.K.O. European Kickboxing Championships in Krynica-Zdrój, Poland.

Taekwondo Highlights

İrem Yaman began competing in taekwondo internationally in 2014. She quickly won a gold medal at the European Under 21 Championship in Innsbruck, Austria. In 2015, she continued her winning streak. She won gold medals at several tournaments, including the Turkish Open, Luxor Open, Ukraine Open, and Moldova Open.

When she was 18, İrem became a world champion at the 2015 World Taekwondo Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia. This was a huge achievement for her.

By 2018, she was ranked first in the World Taekwondo's 62 kg weight class. She had earned 253.81 points, showing how strong she was in her sport.

In 2019, İrem Yaman won another gold medal at the 2019 World Taekwondo Championships in Manchester, England. She beat her opponent, Caroline Santos from Brazil, with a score of 21–7 in the final match. This win made her the first female athlete from Turkey to win two gold medals in taekwondo world championships.

Olympic Selection

In December 2019, the Olympic ranking for the 2020 Summer Olympics was finalized. İrem Yaman was one of the top athletes from Turkey in the rankings. However, each country could only send one athlete per weight class. The Turkish Taekwondo Federation decided that the athlete who performed best in a specific Grand Prix tournament would go to the Olympics.

İrem Yaman mostly earned her points in the 62 kg weight class, which was not an Olympic weight class. Another Turkish athlete, Hatice Kübra İlgün, earned all her points in the 57 kg Olympic weight class. Hatice Kübra İlgün won more medals in the Grand Prix events that year. She also defeated İrem Yaman in the 2019 Russia Grand Prix Final. Because of this, Hatice Kübra İlgün was chosen to represent Turkey in the 57 kg category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

On December 18, 2021, İrem Yaman announced that she was retiring from taekwondo.
