Who Was Ľudovít Lehen?
Ľudovít Lehen studied art at the University of Arts in Bratislava. He attended from 1949 to 1955. His teachers included famous professors like D. Milly and V. Hložník.
In 1956, Lehen won first place in a national art competition in Czechoslovakia. The next year, he earned second place in a graphics art contest. By the late 1950s, his artworks were shown in other countries. These included Belgium, China, and the Soviet Union.
Sadly, Lehen faced a difficult time in his life. He was wrongly accused and spent six years in Leopoldov Prison starting in 1962. But in 1968, during a time of big changes called the Prague Spring, he was found innocent. After his release, Lehen went back to painting. He became quite private. Today, some of his amazing artworks are on display. You can see them at the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava.
His Work in Chess
Besides painting, Ľudovít Lehen also loved chess. Since 1977, he created special chess puzzles called chess problems. He won many awards for his chess compositions. Often, he worked with another expert, Juraj Brabec.
This team of two chess creators came up with new and tricky puzzles. They focused on "fairy" twomovers. These are chess problems with special rules or pieces. Brabec usually thought of the main idea. Then, Lehen would make it into a beautiful and complete puzzle. In 2005, he earned the title of FIDE Master for his chess compositions.
