Şükrü Naili Gökberk (born 1876 in Selanik, which is now Thessaloniki, Greece – died 1936 in Edirne, Turkey) was a very important military leader. He served in the Ottoman Army and later in the Turkish Army. He played a key role in the Turkish War of Independence.

Who Was Şükrü Naili Gökberk?
Şükrü Naili Gökberk started his military career in 1899. He rose through the ranks in the Ottoman Army. By 1917, he was a senior colonel. After the Ottoman Empire, he joined the new Turkish Army. He became a brigadier general in 1922. Later, in 1926, he was promoted to major general.
Fighting in World War I
During World War I, Şükrü Naili Gökberk was a brave officer. He helped defend the Gallipoli peninsula in a major battle. He commanded a division of soldiers there. This was a very tough fight. Towards the end of World War I, he also served on the Palestinian front.
Hero of the Turkish War of Independence
After World War I, Turkey fought for its freedom. This was called the Turkish War of Independence. Şükrü Naili Gökberk was a key commander in this war. He led the Turkish forces (the 3rd Corps) from the government in Ankara.
His most famous moment was on October 6, 1923. On this day, his troops marched into Istanbul. This happened after the city had been occupied by other countries. This event is known as the Liberation Day of Istanbul. It is still celebrated every year in Turkey.
A Leader in Politics
After his military career, Şükrü Naili Gökberk continued to serve his country. He became a member of parliament. He worked in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in Ankara. He represented two different areas. First, he was a member for Kırklareli in 1923. Later, in 1935, he represented Istanbul. He helped make important decisions for the new country of Turkey.
