The year 116 AD was an important time, especially for the powerful Roman Empire. This year saw the Roman Empire reach its largest size ever. It was a time of big changes in the lands to the east of Rome.
Rome's Big Push East
In 116 AD, the Roman Emperor Trajan was leading his armies. He completed a huge invasion of a kingdom called Parthia. Parthia was a major rival to Rome in the east. Emperor Trajan's forces captured several important cities. These included Seleucia, Babylon, Ctesiphon, and Susa.
Capturing these cities was a massive achievement for Rome. It meant the Roman Empire now stretched further east than ever before. This moment is often called the "high-water mark" of the Roman Empire. It was the point when the empire was at its biggest.
New Leaders in Parthia
As part of his victory, Emperor Trajan made some big changes in Parthia. He removed the current king, Osroes I, from power. In his place, Trajan appointed Osroes I's son, Parthamaspates, as the new king.
To show his loyalty to Rome, Parthamaspates even changed his name. He "Romanized" it, meaning he made it sound more Roman. He started calling himself Parthicus. This showed that Rome now had a lot of influence over Parthia.
Rebellions Against Rome
Not everyone was happy with Roman rule. In 116 AD, a group of Jewish people started an uprising against Rome. An uprising is when people rebel or fight against the government in power. However, this rebellion did not succeed. The Roman Empire was very strong, and they were able to stop the uprising.
