Welcome to the year 1323 in the Kingdom of Scotland! This was a time when Scotland was fighting for its independence from England, a period known as the Wars of Scottish Independence. In 1323, some very important events happened that helped bring Scotland closer to peace. Let's explore what happened during this significant year.

Who Was in Charge?

During 1323, the brave and famous Robert I was the King of Scots. He had been leading Scotland through many battles to ensure its freedom. His goal was to make sure Scotland was recognized as an independent country.

Key Events of 1323

This year saw some big steps towards peace between Scotland and England.

A Treaty for Peace

  • 3 January – A man named Andrew Harclay, 1st Earl of Carlisle, who was an English leader, signed a peace treaty with King Robert the Bruce. This was a hopeful sign that the long war might finally be ending.

A Turn of Events for Harclay

  • 3 March – Unfortunately for Andrew Harclay, his actions were not approved by his own king, Edward II of England. Harclay was accused of betraying his country by making a treaty without King Edward's permission. For this serious act, he lost his life.

A Truce is Agreed Upon

  • 30 May – Even though Andrew Harclay was punished, King Edward II of England still decided to make a deal with Scotland. Less than three months after Harclay's death, King Edward agreed to a thirteen-year truce with Scotland. A truce is like a long break in fighting. This was a huge step, as it meant a period of peace and quiet for both nations after many years of war.
