A Big Battle: The End of a Kingdom
In 168 BC, a very important event happened: the end of the Third Macedonian War. This war was fought between the powerful Romans and the Kingdom of Macedon. Macedon was led by its king, Perseus of Macedon.
The Battle of Pydna
The war ended with a decisive fight called the Battle of Pydna. This battle took place on June 22. The Roman army was led by a skilled general named Lucius Aemilius Paullus. His army faced King Perseus and his Macedonian forces.
The Romans won a great victory at Pydna. They defeated King Perseus's army and captured him when he surrendered. Because of this huge win, Lucius Aemilius Paullus was given the special name "Macedonicus." This name showed everyone that he had conquered Macedon.
The End of an Empire
The defeat of King Perseus meant the end of the Antigonid dynasty. This was a royal family that had ruled Macedon for a long time. The Antigonid dynasty was one of the three main kingdoms that were formed after the death of Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great was a famous conqueror who built a massive empire.
With Macedon defeated, the Romans began to control Greece. This battle marked a major step in the Roman Republic's expansion. It showed that Rome was becoming the most powerful force in the Mediterranean world.
