On that day, a terrible event happened. The Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart shortly after launch. All seven astronauts on board died. This tragic accident shocked the entire nation.

Because of this sad news, President Reagan decided to wait. He postponed his speech for one week. Instead, he spoke to the nation about the Challenger disaster. This was the only time a State of the Union address was ever delayed due to a specific event.

When President Reagan finally gave his speech, it lasted about 31 minutes. He spoke 3,514 words. People across the country could hear and watch it. It was broadcast live on both radio and television.
