About 1 Cal Plaza
One California Plaza was finished in 1985. It has a huge amount of office space, about 97,548 square meters (1.05 million square feet). The famous architects Arthur Erickson Architects designed both towers. In 1989, the building was named "BOMA Building of the Year." This award recognizes excellent office buildings.
The California Plaza Project
The entire California Plaza project was a very big plan. It took ten years to build and cost about $1.2 billion. Construction started in 1983. The second tower, Two California Plaza, was finished in 1992.
This was a tough time for real estate in downtown Los Angeles. Many office spaces were empty. Because of this, it took almost 10 years before other very tall buildings were built in the city center.
Building Plans and Changes
The California Plaza was first planned to have three tall office buildings. The third building, called Three California Plaza, was going to be 65 floors high. It was planned for a spot near 4th Street. This building was meant to be the main office for the Metropolitan Water District. However, it was never built.
The building of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) was part of a special deal. The city made an agreement with the developers of California Plaza. The developers paid $23 million for the MOCA building. In return, they were allowed to use a large piece of public land for their project.
