Kim Clijsters from Belgium won the women's singles tennis title at the 2009 US Open. She beat Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark in the final match with scores of 7–5, 6–3. This was Kim Clijsters' second time winning the US Open and her second major tennis title overall.

What made her win extra special was that she was the first player who wasn't "seeded" (meaning not ranked among the top players) and the first "wild card" (a player invited to play even if their ranking isn't high enough) to win the title. She was also the first mother to win a major tennis tournament since Evonne Goolagong in 1980. After her amazing win, her ranking jumped up to 19th in the world. This tournament was a big comeback for Clijsters, as it was only her third event since she returned to tennis after retiring.

The defending champion, Serena Williams, was a strong player from the USA. She lost to Kim Clijsters in the semifinals.

Svetlana Kuznetsova's loss in the fourth round meant that a new player would reach the major final from the top half of the tournament bracket. Caroline Wozniacki made history by becoming the first Danish woman to reach a major final. She was also the first player from Scandinavia to reach the final since Molla Bjurstedt Mallory in 1918.

This tournament was the last major event for two-time major champion Amélie Mauresmo. She lost in the second round. It was also the final major singles appearance for Ai Sugiyama, who had played in a record-breaking 62 major singles tournaments in a row. She lost in the first round. Her record was later broken by Alizé Cornet in 2022.

Top Players and Their Rankings

In tennis tournaments, "seeds" are players who are ranked highly. They are placed in the draw so that the best players don't play each other too early. This helps ensure exciting matches in the later rounds. Here are some of the top-ranked players who competed in the 2009 US Open Women's Singles:
