200 West Madison is a tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in the big city of Chicago, Illinois. This impressive building stands 599 feet (about 182 meters) high. It has 45 floors and was finished in 1982.

Today, 200 West Madison is the 52nd-tallest building in Chicago. A famous company called Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed it. They also designed other very tall buildings like Chicago's Willis Tower and John Hancock Center. They even designed the super-tall Burj Khalifa in Dubai!

Building Design and History

The designers gave 200 West Madison a special "sawtooth edge" shape. This means it has six extra corners on one side. Because of this unique design, many floors have nine "corner offices." These are offices with windows on two different sides.

Original Plans for Twin Towers

When the building was first planned, it was called "Madison Plaza." The idea was to build two identical towers. A second tower was supposed to be built right next to it. However, the plans for this second tower were never completed.

The Skyneedle Proposal

Years later, in 1988, there was a new idea for the empty space next to 200 West Madison. It was called the Miglin-Beitler Skyneedle. This was going to be an incredibly tall tower, reaching 2,000 feet (about 610 meters) and having 125 floors! But this amazing plan was also cancelled. Now, that spot is just a parking garage.

Art at the Building

You can find a famous piece of art at 200 West Madison. It's a large black metal sculpture called "Dawn Shadows." A talented artist named Louise Berliawsky Nevelson created it. The sculpture was placed in the plaza in 1983.

Who Used the Building?

Over the years, many businesses have had offices here. For example, United Airlines used to have a place where people could buy tickets inside this building.
