The London mayoral election, 2016 was a big event that happened on 5 May 2016. People in London voted to choose their next Mayor. This was the fifth time Londoners voted for their Mayor. The Mayor at the time, Boris Johnson, decided not to run again.
The main candidates were Zac Goldsmith from the Conservative Party and Sadiq Khan from the Labour Party. After all the votes were counted, Sadiq Khan became the new Mayor of London.
Who Ran for Mayor?
Many people wanted to become the Mayor of London in 2016. Here are some of the main candidates:
- Conservative Party - Zac Goldsmith
- Labour Party - Sadiq Khan
- Liberal Democrats - Caroline Pidgeon
- Green Party - Siân Berry
- UKIP - Peter Whittle
- Respect Party - George Galloway
How the Votes Were Counted
The election used a special way of counting votes called the supplementary vote system. In this system, voters get to choose two candidates: a first choice and a second choice.
If no candidate gets more than half of the first-choice votes, the two candidates with the most first-choice votes go into a second round. Then, the second-choice votes from the other candidates are added to these two.
Here's how many votes the top candidates received:
- Sadiq Khan - 1,310,143 votes
- Zac Goldsmith - 994,614 votes
- Siân Berry - 150,673 votes
- Caroline Pidgeon - 120,005 votes
- Peter Whittle - 94,373 votes
- George Galloway - 37,007 votes
After both rounds of counting, Sadiq Khan won the election and became the new Mayor of London.
