2018 Puebla helicopter crash facts for kids
On December 24, 2018, a helicopter crashed on a hill near the city of Puebla, Mexico. The helicopter was carrying Martha Érika Alonso Hidalgo, who had just become the Governor of the Mexican state of Puebla. Her husband, Rafael Moreno Valle Rosas, a Senator and former Governor, was also on board.
Five people died in the crash. They were Governor Alonso, Senator Moreno, the two pilots (Captain Roberto Coppe Obregón and Captain Marco Antonio Pavera Romero), and Héctor Baltazar Mendoza, who worked for the senator. Governor Alonso had only been in her new job for 10 days.
The helicopter was heading to Mexico City. It crashed at 2:50 PM local time, just ten minutes after taking off from a special landing area for helicopters in Puebla. The crash happened in an area called Santa María Coronango.
Mexico asked the United States for help with the investigation. They wanted help from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). However, the NTSB could not help because the U.S. government was temporarily closed at that time.
