400 West Market is a very tall building, called a skyscraper, in Downtown Louisville, Kentucky. It has 35 floors and stands about 549 feet (167 meters) high. Architects John Burgee and Philip Johnson designed this impressive structure. When it was built in 1991 for $100 million, it became the tallest building in Kentucky.

Construction started in July 1991. People began moving into the building in October 1992, and it was fully open by April 1993. The building has had a few different names over the years. It was first called Capital Holding Building, then Capital Holding Center. Later, it became the Providian Center, and then the AEGON Center. This happened as the businesses inside changed names or were sold. AEGON moved out in 2010, and the building was renamed 400 West Market in 2014.

About the Building

This skyscraper is currently the tallest building in the state of Kentucky. It is built using strong, reinforced concrete. This is different from many other tall buildings that often use steel.

Cool Features

One special part of the building is its 80-foot (24-meter) tall dome. This dome looks like old Romanesque architecture and glows from the inside at night. The top floors of the building also light up after dark.

During the holiday season, from Thanksgiving Day until New Year's Day, the building's lights change. Instead of the usual white, they glow in a mix of red and green.

Space Inside

The 400 West Market building has lots of space for businesses. It offers 633,650 square feet (58,868 square meters) for offices. There is also 18,787 square feet (1,745 square meters) of space for shops and stores.

Who Owns It?

When it was first built, 400 West Market was owned by a group that included Hines Interest and some Japanese partners. In April 2004, a new group led by David Werner bought the building.

The Alysheba Statue

In the plaza outside 400 West Market, you can find a statue of a famous horse named Alysheba. Alysheba won the 1987 Kentucky Derby, which is a very important horse race. In 1993, Alysheba was added to the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame.
