The 6th Ohio Infantry Regiment was a group of soldiers who fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War. These soldiers were part of a "regiment," which is a military unit made up of many companies. They mostly served in the western part of the United States, taking part in many important battles.
Forming the Regiment
The 6th Ohio Infantry Regiment was formed in Ohio in the spring of 1861. It started with a local volunteer group called the Guthrie Greys. Most of the soldiers came from Hamilton County, Ohio, and nearby areas.
On May 12, the regiment officially joined the national army. At first, they signed up for three months. Their first commander was Colonel William K. Bosley. Nicholas Longworth Anderson from Cincinnati was the first lieutenant colonel.
Serving in the War
The regiment was first sent to what is now West Virginia. After their first three months were over, they reorganized. This time, they signed up for three years.
For the next three years, the 6th Ohio Infantry Regiment fought in the "Western Theater." This was the name for the battles and campaigns that happened in states like Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia. They were officially released from service on June 23, 1864.
Important Leaders and Honors
Nicholas Longworth Anderson later became the colonel, leading the regiment for its last two years. He was a very brave leader.
On March 13, 1865, Anderson was given special honors. He was promoted to the rank of major general and brigadier general. These honors were for his "gallant conduct" (bravery) and "meritorious services" (excellent work). He earned these for his actions in the Battle of Stones River in 1862 and the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863.
After the Civil War
The history of the 6th Ohio Infantry Regiment continued long after the Civil War. Later, other military units carried on its legacy. These included the 147th Infantry Regiment (United States) during World War I and World War II. The unit continued in different forms until 2007.
