The 99th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment was a group of soldiers from Indiana who fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War. They were an infantry regiment, which means they were soldiers who fought on foot.

Joining the Fight

The 99th Indiana officially became part of the Union Army on August 21, 1862. This happened in South Bend, Indiana.

After serving for almost three years, the regiment finished its duty on June 5, 1865. Any soldiers still with the 99th Indiana then joined another group called the 48th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

How Many Soldiers and What Happened to Them

When the 99th Indiana first started, it had about 900 soldiers. During the war, 84 more people joined the regiment.

Sadly, 178 soldiers from the 99th Indiana died from various reasons during their service. This could include sickness or injuries from battles. Also, 38 soldiers left without permission, which was called deserting. Two other soldiers went missing during the war.
