Albert Dean Byrd (born 1948, died 2012) was an American psychologist. He was known for his work in psychology and his academic roles. He was raised by a Buddhist mother and a Baptist father. Later, he became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Education and Career

Dean Byrd earned several advanced degrees. He received a Ph.D. in psychology from Brigham Young University (BYU). He also completed special post-doctoral training in Child and Family Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. Another post-doctoral degree was in Behavioral Medicine from Loyola University, Chicago.

He also earned two master's degrees from the University of Utah. These were an M.P.H. (Master of Public Health) and an M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration). He was also an expert in forensic medicine, which involves using medical knowledge in legal cases.

Professional Roles

Byrd held many important positions during his career. He was the Director of Clinical Training for LDS Social Services. He also taught as a Clinical Professor at Brigham Young University. At the time of his death, he was a Clinical Professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine. There, he worked in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry. He also had a role in the Department of Family Studies at the University of Utah.

At the University of Utah, he taught medical students about differences in health care among people. He was a member of several professional groups, including the American Psychological Association. He also served on the governing board of the Utah Psychological Association.

Byrd was a fellow of the American Orthopsychiatric Association. He was also part of the American Public Health Association. He was a member of the American Board of Forensic Examiners. He was also involved with the Prescribing Psychologist Register, which trains psychologists in using medications.

He was also the president of the Thrasher Research Fund. This organization gives money for research on children's health. In 2007, he was chosen to be president of a professional association for the year 2008. He was also a visiting professor in Israel and Poland. Earlier in his career, he studied genetics, biochemistry, and neurochemistry at the University of California at Berkeley.

Death

Dean Byrd passed away on April 4, 2012. He died from cancer.
