AAA (pronounced Triple A) is a Japanese pop group that started in September 2005. Their name stands for Attack All Around, which means they like to "challenge everything" or "go against all odds." Their music label, Avex Trax, calls them a "super performance unit" because they are so talented!

The group was created after auditions held by Avex. When they first started, AAA had five young men and three young women. Some of them had already been in commercials or worked as backup dancers for famous Japanese singers like Ayumi Hamasaki.

The Story of AAA: From Debut to Today

How AAA Started: 2005–2006

AAA was first planned to be a group of six members. It included five boys: Takahiro Nishijima, Naoya Urata, Shuta Sueyoshi, Shinjiro Atae, Mitsuhiro Hidaka, and one girl, Misako Uno. Later, Avex decided to add two more girls, Yukari Goto and then Chiaki Ito, making it an eight-member group. All of them trained at the Avex Artist Academy.

In April 2005, Avex officially announced the group's debut with seven members (Chiaki Ito joined a bit later). Naoya Urata, the oldest member, became the leader. AAA officially began their activities in May, and Chiaki Ito joined on June 15.

AAA officially debuted on September 14, 2005, with their song "Blood on Fire." This song became popular because it was used as the theme song for the live-action Initial-D movie.

In their first year, AAA won the "Best Newcomer Award" at the 47th Japan Record Awards. They released a new song every month from September to December, along with a photobook and their first album, Attack, in January 2006. Even though they were very busy, their songs did well on the music charts.

In June 2006, AAA's official fan club, "AAA Party," opened. Misako Uno, one of the main female singers, even acted in the Hollywood movie The Grudge 2 in October 2006. After releasing a mini-album, "All/2," in September 2006, AAA released their second full album, All, on January 1, 2007. This album was also successful!

Growing and Acting: 2007–2009

In 2007, AAA had another popular song, "Climax Jump," which was the theme song for the TV show Kamen Rider Den-O. They released it under the name "AAA Den-O Form." This song sold very well and became their most successful song at the time.

The members of AAA also started getting more acting jobs, which helped them become even more famous. For example, their song "Kuchibiru Kara Romantica/That's Right" was used in the TV drama Delicious Gakuin, which starred members Takahiro Nishijima and Shinjiro Atae.

On June 11, 2007, Yukari Goto left the group due to health reasons. After her departure, AAA became a seven-member group. Soon after, they traveled overseas for the first time to perform at Otakon 2007 in Baltimore, Maryland. Naoya Urata and Chiaki Ito also appeared in their first movie, Heat Island, in October 2007.

In 2008, AAA got their first number one song on the Oricon weekly charts with "Mirage." They also released their first collection of hit songs called Attack All Around. All members of AAA played main characters in the TV drama Mirai Seiki Shakespeare, which was a modern version of Shakespeare's plays. Takahiro Nishijima also showed a lot of interest in acting and performed in many stage plays.

Takahiro Nishijima got his first main role in a movie called Love Exposure, which came out in January 2009. His acting was highly praised, and he won awards like the Sponichi Grand Prix New Face Award.

The group released their fourth album, DepArture, on February 11, 2009. It reached number four on the Oricon charts, which was their first time in the top five for a studio album.

After several successful songs in 2007 and 2008, AAA had an even more successful period starting in 2009 with their album Heartful. For the first time, they were invited to perform on the popular music TV show Music Station to sing "Hide Away." This song also marked a new phase for the group, as Chiaki Ito started singing more lead parts, joining Nishijima, Uno, and Urata. At the end of the year, they released "With You," which was the first ending theme for the anime Inuyasha: The Final Act.

Asia Tours and Anniversaries: 2010–2015

In 2010, AAA's song "Aitai Riyū/Dream After Dream ~Yume Kara Sameta Yume~" reached number one on the Oricon weekly charts in May. This was their second number one song! The famous composer Tetsuya Komuro worked on this song, which helped make it even more popular.

Because "Aitai Riyū" was so popular, AAA was invited to perform for the first time on Kōhaku Uta Gassen, a very famous music show in Japan. This greatly increased their popularity. In December, Naoya Urata released his own song, "Dream On," featuring his friend and fellow artist Ayumi Hamasaki. This song also reached number one, helping both Urata and the group.

Tetsuya Komuro continued to work with AAA on many songs, including all the songs on their sixth album, Buzz Communication. In 2011, they released their second collection album, #AAABEST, which became their best-selling album at the time and their first number one album on the Oricon weekly charts. Around this time, the group started giving more equal singing parts to all members, moving away from just a few "lead singers."

Their song "Still Love You" in 2012 marked a change, as they started working with other composers again instead of just Komuro. On August 22, 2012, AAA released the album "777 -Triple Seven." The title was special because it represented the seven members, their seventh album, and their seventh anniversary! In October, AAA's new variety show, AAA no Kizuna Gasshuku, started airing on TV Asahi and YouTube. At the end of the year, AAA was invited to perform at Kōhaku Uta Gassen for the third year in a row.

In 2013, the group began their largest tour yet, "AAA Tour 2013 Eighth Wonder," performing at 41 venues for about 150,000 fans. Their show AAA no Kizuna Gasshuku was very popular on YouTube, with over 10 million views, and a second season began. A third season was also announced, and for the first time, AAA filmed the show abroad in Singapore.

On September 18, AAA released their eighth album, Eighth Wonder. This album became AAA's first original studio album to reach number one on the Oricon charts. Their music video for "Koi Oto to Amazora" was the most-viewed Japanese music video on YouTube in September. AAA ended the year by performing this song at Kōhaku Uta Gassen.

On January 14, 2014, AAA was chosen as the special ambassadors for the 15th anniversary of the anime One Piece, and they provided a new song called "Wake up!" for its opening theme. On May 17, the group started their first all-arena tour, "AAA ARENA TOUR 2014 -Gold Symphony-," their biggest tour yet with about 200,000 attendees. AAA released their ninth studio album, Gold Symphony, on October 1, which also reached number one on the Oricon charts. During the last concert of the tour on October 18, it was announced that AAA would have their first Asia tour in 2015. In 2015, AAA released their 10th Anniversary Best album, which included songs like "I'll be There," "Lil' Infinity," and "Aishiteru no ni, Aisenai."

"MAGIC," their last song as seven members, was released on February 8, 2017. After that, their full album WAY OF GLORY was released on February 22, 2017. AAA continued as a six-member group after Ito's departure.

AAA's first song as six members, "No Way Back," was released on June 28, 2017. On June 17, 2017, they started a new arena concert tour at Hiroshima Green Arena. AAA held their first official fan meetings called "AAA FAN MEETING ARENA TOUR 2018-FAN FUN FAN-," starting on May 26, 2018, at OSAKA-JO HALL. On August 22, 2018, AAA released their 11th and final studio album, COLOR A LIFE. They also had their second four-major dome tour for this album, with 340,000 attendees. This tour began on September 1, 2018, at Tokyo Dome.

In 2019, AAA continued with their fan meetings and dome tour, "AAA FAN MEETING ARENA TOUR 2019-FAN FUN FAN-" and "AAA DOME TOUR 2019 +PLUS." They also released their 57th and final song, "BAD LOVE," on October 23, 2019. Naoya Urata later announced he would be leaving the group on December 31, 2019.

On January 15, 2020, AAA announced that they would be taking a break from group activities starting December 31, 2020, so members could focus on their individual projects and personal lives. They released a 15th-anniversary greatest hits album called "AAA 15th Anniversary All Time Best -thanx AAA lot-" on February 19. They also planned a six-major dome tour, which would have been the first time a mixed-gender group in Japan did such a tour. The tour was originally set to begin November 7, 2020, but was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. Even though the tour was delayed, the group's planned break from activities still went ahead.
