History of A.C. Mestre
How the Club Started
The club began in 1927. Its first name was Unione Sportiva Mestrina.
Early Success and Challenges
Mestrina first played in Serie C in 1938. They won the league in 1946. This led them to play in the 1946–47 Serie B season. This was a very important time for the club.
In the years that followed, Mestrina usually played in Serie C and Serie D. In 1980, the club changed its name. It became Associazione Calcio Mestre. They regularly played in the Serie C1 and Serie C2 leagues.
Changes and New Beginnings
In 1987, a person named Maurizio Zamparini bought the club. He also owned Venezia. He wanted to combine the two clubs. The new club was called Venezia-Mestre Calcio. Its colors mixed Mestre's orange and black with Venezia's black and green.
In 1989, the club's name changed again to Venezia 1907. This name did not include Mestre anymore. The team also moved out of Mestre's stadium in 1991. Because of this, people tried to restart the original Mestre club. A local club, Malcontenta, moved to Mestre. It changed its name to Malcontenta-Mestrina, and then to Mestre Calcio.
Return to Professional Football
In 1995, Mestre Calcio returned to Serie D. They earned another promotion the next year. This brought Mestre back to professional football in 1996. However, the club was moved down a league in 2003. After that, the club faced financial problems and stopped playing for a short time.
The club started playing again from a very low league called Terza Categoria. By 2010, they reached Prima Categoria. Another small club in town, Mestrina F.C., was playing in Eccellenza. In 2015, these two clubs joined together. They took over the playing rights of a club called Union Pro. Union Pro was playing in Serie D.
Through these changes, Mestre returned to Serie D for the 2015–16 season. They won promotion to Serie C in 2017. This was under their coach, Mauro Zironelli.
Recent Seasons
After the 2017–18 Serie C season, Mestre tried to join the next championship. But new financial supporters changed their minds. They were worried about the club's facilities. Because of this, Mestre could not register for Serie C. They had to play the 2018–19 season in Eccellenza.
Mestre quickly earned promotion back to Serie D. They won the national playoff tournament in 2019.
