A Hard Day’s Night is a famous album by The Beatles. It was released on July 10, 1964. This album was also the soundtrack for a movie with the same name. The movie starred The Beatles and was directed by Richard Lester. It was their third album ever released. The funny title for the album and movie came from Ringo Starr. He said it by accident during the filming of the movie.

Making the Movie

The movie A Hard Day's Night was made because a film company called United Artists wanted to sell a soundtrack album. Back then, many movies that featured rock and roll bands were not very good. The Beatles did not want to be in a movie unless it was well-made and had a good story. United Artists agreed to this. They hired a playwright named Alun Owen to write the script.

Alun Owen traveled with The Beatles on a concert tour. He first planned to write a made-up story. But he soon realized the best story would be based on what he saw. He watched how the band members acted with each other and with other people. He then wrote a story that felt real. A character called the "grandfather" was added to the movie. This character was played by Wilfrid Brambell. He was a popular TV actor. He was known for playing a character who dealt with used goods. In the movie, his character is often joked about for being "very clean." This was a funny contrast to his TV role.

Even with a script, The Beatles often made up some of their own lines. They also acted out ideas that the director, Richard Lester, gave them. This made the movie feel more natural and fun.

What the Movie is About

In the movie, The Beatles travel to London to perform on a television show. Paul's family sends his grandfather along to keep him company. The grandfather is a bit of a troublemaker. He likes to cause small problems between people. He is also often called "very clean," which is a joke about the actor who played him.

The Beatles in the movie enjoy breaking rules and playing jokes. Their manager, Norm, and road manager, "Shake," try to keep things running smoothly. But they have a very busy time trying to manage both The Beatles and Paul's grandfather. They also have to make sure the TV show happens as planned. The characters of Norm and Shake were loosely based on The Beatles' real road managers, Neil Aspinall and Mal Evans.
