History of Aavin

How Aavin Started

The Dairy Development Department was set up in Tamil Nadu in 1926-27. Its job was to manage milk production and sales in the state. This department took charge of all the milk cooperatives. Later, in 1981, it was replaced by the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited (TNCMPFL).

On February 1, 1981, TNCMPFL took over all the business activities. They started selling milk and milk products under the brand name "Aavin." Tamil Nadu is one of the top states in India for milk production. It produces about 14.5 million liters of milk every day. Currently, about 10 million people buy Aavin products daily.

What "Aavin" Means

The name 'Aa' or 'ஆ' in the Tamil means 'பசு' (which is 'cow'). 'பால்' means 'milk'. So, 'Aavin paal' ('ஆவின் பால்') means 'cow's milk' ('பசுவின் பால்').

Recent Partnerships and Growth

In April 2020, Aavin teamed up with Swiggy, a food delivery service. This partnership allowed Swiggy to deliver Aavin's dairy products right to people's homes. They started delivering from 21 stores across Chennai city.

In July 2020, Aavin started a new plan to help taxi and auto drivers. They invited these drivers to become 'mobile agents' for Aavin. This helped the drivers earn money during the COVID-19 lockdown. It also helped Aavin sell more milk products across Tamil Nadu.

According to company reports from 2020, Aavin collected about 4 million liters of milk every day. About 2.5 million liters were sold as fresh milk. The rest was turned into other products. These products included skimmed milk powder, ice creams, buttermilk, curd, ghee, and butter. The company's yearly sales were about ₹5800 crore in 2019-20. Monthly milk sales also increased from ₹34.78 crore to ₹41.15 crore.

Helping Farmers and Processing Milk

The Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation Limited is the main organization for 17 District Cooperative Milk Producers' Unions. It buys milk from villagers, which helps the farming community earn money. Aavin also processes the milk and makes various milk products.

Its main office is at Aavin Illam, Kumbakonam, in Thanjavur District. Aavin has three dairy plants in Thanjavur:

These dairies collect milk from different district unions. They process and pack the milk into sachets. Then, they send it out for sale to customers. Aavin currently buys about 3.8 million to 4 million liters of milk daily. They use special cloud-based technology to check the milk's quality, quantity, price, and temperature. The Ambattur product Dairy focuses on making milk products. The first modern Aavin parlor in Coimbatore opened in March 2021.

New Plants and Products

In February 2021, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K Palaniswami, started the building of two new Aavin plants in Virudhunagar.

  • The plant in Enjar village cost ₹70.15 crore to build. It automatically fills high-temperature milk into special tetra packets. This plant can produce about 25,000 tetra packs every day.
  • The second plant in Srivalliputhur makes milk products like yogurt, curd, lassi, buttermilk, and other healthy probiotic drinks. Both these plants received money from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

In February 2021, Aavin also planned to build an ice cream plant. This plant, located in Kottapattu, can make 6,000 liters of ice cream per day. It cost ₹43 crore to build. This facility also has a unit to make fermented dairy products, with a capacity of 10,000 liters per day.

In September 2017, Aavin announced that it would launch seven different kinds of milk-based sweets for the Deepavali festival.

Selling Products Worldwide

The Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation Limited has agreements with six different sellers. These sellers help Aavin sell its milk and milk products within India. They also export products to other countries like the United Arab Emirates, Ajman, Oman, Qatar, Canada, and the US. This helps Aavin earn around ₹6 crores each year.

Current Operations

Aavin is a very important part of milk production in India. About 3.85 lakh (385,000) milk producers supply milk every day. They do this through 9,189 local milk producer cooperative societies across Tamil Nadu.
