Aavin is a large company in India that makes and sells milk and milk products. It is owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Aavin collects milk from farmers, processes it, and then sells it to people.
The company makes many different products. These include milk, butter, yogurt, ice cream, ghee (a type of clarified butter), milk shakes, and even chocolate. They also make tea and coffee.
Aavin's Story
The story of Aavin began in 1958. Back then, a special department was created in Tamil Nadu. Its job was to manage milk production and sales across the state. This department took over the local milk cooperatives.
Later, in 1981, a new group was formed. It was called the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited (TNCMPFL). This group took over all the business activities. They started selling milk and milk products under the name "Aavin."
The word 'Aa' or 'ஆ' in the Tamil language means 'cow'. So, 'Aavin paal' ('ஆவின் பால்') means 'cow's milk'.
Tamil Nadu is a big milk producer in India. About 14.5 million liters of milk are produced every day. Aavin serves around 10 million customers daily.
In April 2020, Aavin teamed up with Swiggy, a food delivery service. This partnership allowed Swiggy to deliver Aavin's dairy products right to people's homes. They started with 21 stores in Chennai.
In July 2020, Aavin also started a new idea. They invited auto and taxi drivers to become "mobile agents." These drivers could sell Aavin products across Tamil Nadu. This helped both Aavin sell more products and supported the drivers during difficult times.
Aavin collects about 4 million liters of milk every day. Around 2.5 million liters are sold as fresh milk. The rest is used to make other products. These include skimmed milk powder, ice creams, buttermilk, curd, ghee, and butter. In 2019-2020, Aavin's total sales were about ₹5800 crore.
What Aavin Does
The Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation Limited is the main organization for 17 smaller milk cooperatives. It collects milk from farmers in villages. This helps the farmers earn money and supports their communities. Aavin also processes the milk and makes various milk products.
Aavin's main office is in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District. They have three large dairy plants in the Thanjavur area:
- Thiruvidaimarudur - can process 400,000 liters of milk per day.
- Thanjavur - can process 300,000 liters of milk per day.
- Kumbakonam - can process 400,000 liters of milk per day.
These dairies collect milk from different areas. They process it, pack it into sachets, and then send it out for sale. Aavin buys about 3.8 to 4 million liters of milk daily. They use special cloud-based technology to check the milk's quality, quantity, price, and temperature.
Aavin also has a special dairy in Ambattur that focuses on making milk products. In March 2021, the first modern Aavin parlor opened in Coimbatore.
In February 2021, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu started building two new Aavin plants. One plant in Enjar village will automatically fill high-temperature milk into special tetra packs. It will produce about 25,000 tetra packs daily. The second plant in Srivalliputhur will make products like yogurt, curd, lassi, and buttermilk. These new plants are being funded by NABARD, a bank that supports rural development.
Aavin is also planning to build a new ice cream plant. It will be able to make 6,000 liters of ice cream every day. This plant will also have a unit for making fermented dairy products like yogurt.
In September 2017, Aavin launched seven new types of milk-based sweets for the Deepavali festival.
Aavin has also made deals with six different companies. These deals allow Aavin to sell its milk and milk products not only in India but also in other countries. They export to places like the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Canada, and the US. This helps Aavin earn more money.
